A regular guest on shows like The Doctors, Good Morning America and The Weather Channel’s America’s Morning Headquaters, Dr. MacPete recently released a new children’s book titled “Lisette The Vet.” The Book is perfect for kids and pet lovers and is especially good for kids who are aspiring towards a profession as a veterinarian.
“Lisette The Vet” is a new picture book about a smart, animal-loving little girl who, like many other kids, want to be a veterinarian when she grows-up. According to the official plot description:
Lisette loves animals: big or little, furry or feathery, even slimy or scaly. Well … almost all animals. When her class gets a new pet, she can’t wait to meet him. When she finally meets Fluffy, he is not what she expected. Then disaster strikes! Will Lisette the Vet save the day?
This beautifully illustrated picture book, created by veterinarian Ruth MacPete, is sure to entertain and delight kids with its adorable animals of all kinds and relatable characters. Dr. Ruth recently discussed this book and its publication process via an exclusive interview.
Meagan Meehan (MM): Have you always enjoyed writing?
Dr. Ruth: Yes, I have always love to write! I started writing about pet health about 15 years ago as a way to connect with pet parents and share my veterinary knowledge. I still remember how excited I was when I heard from Cat Fancy Magazine that they had accepted my first article for publication.
MM: What inspired you to write Lisette the Vet?
Dr. Ruth: Lisette the Vet started six years ago! After reading countless books to my young kids I realized there were a lot of picture books about fairies, monsters, pirates, princesses, super heroes and more but not a lot of picture books about the best profession in the world…veterinary medicine. Instead of dreaming of becoming a princess I wanted to encourage my daughter to become a veterinarian. So, Lisette the Vet, a super smart animal loving girl who doesn’t run from her fears, was born!
MM: What do you hope children take away from the book?
Dr. Ruth: I hope to inspire children to overcome their fears and to always believe in themselves. And, of course, I want children to share my passion for veterinary medicine and to become inspired to become future veterinarians.
MM: Do you plan to publish more books with Forest Lane Books?
Dr. Ruth: Yes, I am working on a sequel to Lisette the Vet and another picture book now. I am hoping this time around it doesn’t take 6 years!
MM: do kids typically react to this story and what messages do you hope readers take away from How the book?
Dr. Ruth: This fall I started doing author visits at elementary schools to read my book and talk about my profession. It has been so much fun! I love being able to read my story to them and of course I love talking about veterinary medicine and animals! I have gotten great reviews from the kids and that means the world to me. Many tell me they have always wanted to be a veterinarian like myself and the main character Lisette. I hope my book and my author visits inspire kids to follow their dreams and pursue a career in veterinary medicine. I also hope kids realize all animals deserve our respect and to be treated kindly.
