SneakPeek Early Gender DNA Test was designed in part by Chris Jacob is a San Diego-based scientist, entrepreneur, angel investor, and patent attorney. After obtaining a degree in bioengineering from the University of California, San Diego, Chris worked as a scientist at several pharmaceutical and biotech companies to develop drug therapies for stroke, heart attack, and anemia. Chris is an author on several peer-reviewed journal articles and an inventor on numerous pending and issued US patents. Chris went on to establish a law practice that focused on the management of the patent matters for a dozen public and private life science companies. Chris is a member of the California Bar and a registered patent attorney with the US Patent & Trademark Office.
As an entrepreneur and investor, Chris finds tremendous satisfaction in building great companies with inspired teams. Over the past decade, Chris has founded three companies in San Diego which collectively have been named to Inc’s list of America’s fastest growing private companies ten times. Chris currently serves as the CEO of Gateway Genomics, the market leader for fetal sex testing and one of the fastest-growing private companies in California. He also serves as the CEO of Biomedical Research Laboratories, a science-based consumer nutrition company. Chris is a member of the Tech Coast Angels and actively advises and invests in early-stage life science and tech companies. Tech Coast Angels is the largest Angel investor network in the US.
Chris recently discussed the product via an exclusive interview.
Meagan Meehan (MM): How did you initially get interested in becoming a scientist?
Chris Jacob (CJ): As a child I gravitated towards math and science. I won 1st place in a city science fair in middle school. In college I majored in bioengineering which is a fusion of life science and engineering disciplines. As an undergraduate at UCSD, I worked in several laboratories on campus and also with local biotech companies. Working on complex science problems and helping to develop life science products has always been very rewarding for me.
MM: Why does DNA fascinate you so much?
CJ: Our DNA is the single greatest factor in determining who we are and who we will become. The experiences we have in life and our environment matter as well, just not as much as our DNA. The more we learn about our DNA, the more we learn about ourselves. What I find fascinating about studying our DNA is the potential to better understand our own inherited strengths and weaknesses and then using that information to create an optimal environment that plays up our strengths and helps us achieve our full potential.
MM: When did you start designing this test?
CJ: About ten years ago, I was working on a fetal genome study based on blood samples from pregnant women. One question kept coming up from study participants: What is the gender of my baby? A simple question, but one that was very expensive to answer. Why should it be so expensive and exclusive? So, we set out to find a better answer. We simplified the DNA test methodology to only look for a single marker: Y chromosome DNA. If male Y chromosome DNA was found in mom’s blood, then we know baby is male. If no Y chromosome DNA is detected, baby is female. Because we were only looking for one thing, we could use a very small sample of mom’s blood that could be taken from the comfort of home, making it easy and convenient. And so SneakPeek was born.
MM: How have you secured opportunities to attain such success?
CJ: After obtaining a degree in bioengineering from the University of California, San Diego, I worked as a scientist at several pharmaceutical and biotech companies to develop drug therapies for stroke, heart attack, and anemia. I’m an author on several peer-reviewed journal articles and an inventor on numerous pending and issued US patents. While working as a pharmaceutical scientist during the day, I attended law school at night to pursue my interest in intellectual property law. After graduating from law school, I served as patent counsel for biopharmaceutical and molecular diagnostics companies. As an entrepreneur and investor, I find tremendous satisfaction in building great companies with inspired teams. Over the past decade, I have founded three companies in San Diego which collectively have been named to Inc’s list of America’s fastest growing private companies ten times. I currently serve as the CEO of Gateway Genomics and Biomedical Research Laboratories. I am also a member of the Tech Coast Angels and actively advise and invest in early-stage life science and tech companies.
MM: What has been the most rewarding thing about working in this field?
CJ: The most rewarding aspect of working in DNA testing is the ability to provide life changing information to others through the analysis of their DNA. With our flagship product, SneakPeek Early Gender DNA Test we are able to let parents learn the sex of their baby sooner than ever before. I remember one of our customers comparing the excitement of awaiting test results of her SneakPeek test to a child waiting to open a present on Christmas Day. I’ve seen videos online of customers crying tears of joy in that moment when they open their SneakPeek email with our test results and find out that they are having a baby boy or girl. It’s an amazing experience that we are able to provide with a simple DNA test. It’s a very rewarding field to work in.
MM: What has been the best feedback you’ve gotten about the DNA test?
CJ: The best feedback has come from the 450,000 families that have used SneakPeek to learn the sex of their baby earlier than ever before. We had one customer that flew from Canada to California for a single day just to take our test and learn the gender of her baby. Many customers have told us that SneakPeek helped them plan for their pregnancy and helped their partner connect with the baby. Another customer wrote us a letter and told us a very moving story about how her grandfather was in hospice and that his dying wish was to have a grandson. That customer took our test and found out she was having a baby boy. She was able to share the news with her grandfather just before he passed away. She was so grateful for having SneakPeek available to make his wish come true. Stories like that make all of the work that we do worthwhile.
MM: What events, projects, or other exhibitions are coming up soon and is there anything else that you would like to discuss?
CJ: We recently launched SneakPeek Snap – a breakthrough push-button blood collection device that makes at-home baby gender testing a snap. The Snap device allows our customers to collect their DNA samples in an easy, painless manner in the privacy of their own home. We also launched a new product for infants and toddlers called SneakPeek Traits. With SneakPeek Traits parents can know what their baby will look like as an adult, nutritional profile, and sleep behavior, sooner than ever before, as predicted by his or her genes. SneakPeek DNA tests can be ordered online at SneakPeekTest.com or on Amazon.com. Our tests are also available from over 1,300 health professionals and independent labs. SneakPeek DNA tests are currently available in the United States, UK, Canada, and Australia.
