Let’s just suppose you are a working couple with two kids.

You are most likely two people waking up to mad mornings, dashing to the creche, cursing furiously in traffic, working on projects with ruthless deadlines and more. During the rambling meeting, you are wondering if the babysitter remembered the medicine for your daughter and at home, you can’t stop thinking about the big meeting tomorrow.  The babysitter decides to take off; you are stressed even thinking about the impending conversation with your partner (for the third time this week) on your travel dates that happen to be clashing with his. Your evenings are again filled with bits and pieces of the day’s pending work in between your kids’ screams for attention; and by this time you are already feeling so guilty; you could kill yourself. (Same for the man, though research shows they feel far less guilty).

They say, it takes a village to raise a child. If you are a working parent, it takes your employer to raise your child as well.

gDiapers

Appalled by the statistics that about 50 million disposable diapers( each taking 500 years to decompose!) were discarded every single day in the United State alone, founder Kim and Jason Graham-Nye brought the idea of having  fully compostable and flushable diaper inserts to the United States. gDiapers is very vocal about their environment-friendly policies.

What makes it great for parents?

  • Mostly run by mums, gDiapers has the energy of a team that is distributed across the world and yet has a fierce common goal. The team is distributed across US, UK and Australia. The teams meet once or twice every week in a coffee shop or an all-hands lunch. They also have:
  • Subsidised on-site day-care
  • Compressed work hours –where they work 4 days instead of 5

  • Stand-up desks and treadmill desks – to encourage an active lifestyle

[bctt tweet=”Flex-work policies is a terrific business strategy @gDiapers” username=”kidskintha”]

Jason gDiapers “The notion that we are required to be at our desk at 8 AM and leave by 6 PM with a one -hour regulated lunch break seems rather archaic. While flex-benefit policies can then be seen as an employee benefit, the reality is that they are a business strategy, plain and simple”- Jason Graham-Nye, Co-Founder, gDiapers.

The Zapier team is very nimble with a generous 14-week parental leave policy. Not maternity leave, but parental leave. There is no hidden expectation that you will be “available” during that time. The transition back to work is easy because everybody understands the “new normal”.

[bctt tweet=”@Zapier understands the ‘new normal’ of parents and helps them ease into it” username=”kidskintha”]

Brian Cooksey“There were several key things that made the extended leave work. The first was my team. They knew I would be gone, and there was no expectation (written or unwritten) that I would stay connected. No emails, no chat mentions, no text messages or phone calls that I had to answer. My team respected that boundary, and it was a big relief. They would occasionally CC me on emails or mention me in threads that I might want to know about when I got back, but the intention was to keep me informed, not require input.”- Brian Cooksey- Full Stack Engineer and new dad , Zapier.

Our team members come from all corners of the world, women in engineering and data science, and parents (men and women) in leadership roles. We proactively support families, and we know first hand that it can be tricky to find that balance. Almost everyone at the management level has kids and we lead by example. Occasionally, we bring our kids to office and it’s fun to share what we’re up to with our kids, and let them see what their moms and dads actually do all day. Though, honestly, they tend to be more interested in the ping pong table. We’ll continue to support families to retain the incredibly talented team we have assembled.  Finally, we want to win”- Stefanie Syman – Head of Communications, x.ai.
